Mobile Linux
Making Linux a reality for mass market mobile handsets
Since 2003, Purple Labs has adopted Linux as the basis of its mobile development platform.
Making Linux real-time
In order to fully support real-time applications with minimum hardware resources, Purple Labs utilises a virtualisation layer enabling a dual kernel to run on a single-core chipset. With this approach, the standard Linux kernel runs as a single task while modem tasks are performed by a real-time OS running on the same chip.
Highly-optimised Linux platform
When developing its Mobile Linux platform, the key objective of Purple Labs has always been to optimise the hardware and software bill of material (BoM). The current version of the Mobile Linux suite runs on a 208MHz single core chipset and only requires 32MB RAM and 32MB SDRAM (64MB RAM for video telephony).
Mobile Linux for mass market
This approach allows Purple Labs customers to develop very cost-effective Linux 3G mobile handsets. Within a light and optimised package, the mobile Linux suite of Purple Labs offers a turnkey solution for the development of mass market feature phones.
